Google just announced that it will be the default music play for the Samsung Galaxy S8.  Which is great news for both Samsung and Galaxy owners.  Why is this great news?  Well, consumers want to be able to use apps and services that they know and are used to.  Who wants to use a generic music service that no one has ever heard of?  Samsung needs to make sure that it has these capabilities in order to keep customers, and ultimately draw new ones.  I’ve said it before, and I will likely say it again, but you have to give the people what they want.

And that is exactly what Samsung is doing.  Not only are they giving users Google Play Music, they are also giving users 100,000 songs for free.  But there is one small catch.  You have to be a new user.  Too bad for those who already use the service.  But let’s get back to the number of songs.  Who has or even wants access to that many songs?  I’m a bit envious as my iPhone has some storage issues, and I can only handle about 20 songs at a time.  That doesn’t include cloud access.  But, if I was really interested in listening to music, I would definitely consider this phone as an option for my upgrade.  Don’t get me wrong, I love music, but I have found ways around my storage issues.

The downside to that is you have to be new to the service.  Which I get.  Samsung is trying to get people to buy their product, so they are enticing them with these kinds of deals.  And good for them.  I suspect it will draw some people to the product.  My sister-in-law said that she thought she might get it as an update, but when she found out the cost, I think she decided against it.  But that is the cost of doing business these days.  The cost to buy a phone now is a lot more than it used to be.  And on one hand, I can understand it.  You have a mini computer in your hand or pocket at all times.  You can access anything and everything from your phone.  So it makes sense.  But you have to weigh out the benefits.

Google Play Music will also be integrated with Bixby.  Meaning, you can ask Bixby to start playing music.  It will default to the Google player, and it’s unknown if you could switch it to another music service.  It looks like they’ve hit the nail on the head by adding the Google Play Music option.  Why spend time and money on developing your own apps, when some amazing ones exist already?  And these are typically the apps that people want to use.  Google has a good series of apps available.  So why not take advantage of that?  Samsung has a good product with the Galaxy S8, and hopefully they will focus on that and leave the apps to the professionals.
