As far as science fiction goes, 2017 has been kind of incredible.  More specifically, science fiction and even fantasy films have stood out among the best.  Some have been major motion pictures that everyone has heard of, but there are some that went unnoticed. We are here to fix that.  Here are some of the most fantastic films that you may have missed this year, in the science fiction or fantasy genre.

Raw

Raw is about a girl who goes to veterinary school as a vegetarian and quickly becomes a meat eater.  Except, it’s not of the animal variety, but rather humans.  Some have called this movie “delightful”, and it kind of is.  If you can get past the cannibalism part that is.  Making it a unique coming of age story with some of the sickest (not a good “sick” either) visuals you will ever see in a movie.  At least this year.

The Lure

The Lure is a Polish musical about mermaids who join the staff of a burlesque club.  Which doesn’t even come close to describing just how weird the movie is.  The movie doesn’t even come together at the end, but its originality, music, and visuals make the film a must watch, regardless.

Mayhem

There were two movies released this year about something that went terribly wrong in an office building.  One is the Belko Experiment and the other is Mayhem.  Both movies explore the violence that occurs after that and are extremely entertaining.  But, if you have to choose just one, go with Mayhem.  Why?  Because it puts more of a sci-fi spin on the material and has a much more kinetic, manic feel to it.

Life

Life has got some pretty stellar A-list talent, and it’s from a major studio. Not to mention, it has some of the best sci-fi action we’ve seen all year.  It should have been a huge hit, but it wasn’t – which is a shame.  If you missed it, you need to check it out ASAP.

Colossal

Colossal stars Anne Hathaway as a woman who discovers that she’s actually been controlling a giant monster that’s been terrorizing Korea.  It’s a unique concept.  One that we haven’t seen before.  But it’s also poignant, exciting, funny and even thought-provoking.  You also need to put this one on your must-watch list.

The Void

If you are a fan of Hellraiser or similarly dark tales, then you will want to check out The Void.  It’s about a group of people trapped in a hospital that has some very disturbing secrets.  The more we learn about those secrets, the crazier the movie becomes.

Your Name

Your Name is an animated film from Japan that was released there last year.  It was only released in the states this year, which means that a lot of people missed it.  However, J.J. Abrams noticed it, and liked it so much, he decided to make a remake.  The story is of two kids who, at night, mysteriously end up switching consciousnesses.  The whole thing seems kind of odd, but it may end up saving the world.

My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea

Cartoonist Dash Saw turned the awkward experience of high school life into a fascinating animated film.  It features the voices of Jason Schwartzman and Reggie Watts.  After two friends get into an argument, their school starts sinking into the sea and they have to figure out how to escape its demonic layers in order to save it and their friendship.

Sleight

This is actually a superhero movie. Well, partially. This is something that you would know, if you had of seen it already.  For the majority of the movie, it’s about a young man trying to keep his family alive through his magic skills (well, mostly).  The movie’s story beats do feel a bit familiar, but Jacob Latimore is fantastic as the lead, and it has a truly wonderful finale.

The Discovery

The Discovery can be found on Netflix, and it has one of the most fascinating premises of the year.  Scientists prove that the afterlife is real, and this revelation changes everything and everybody.  It explores this idea with total seriousness, and the dark story within feels incredibly authentic.
