The Samsung Galaxy S9 was finally unveiled at the MWC 2018 Conference on Sunday.  What do we know about the Samsung Galaxy S9?  We know the Galaxy S9 will cost £739, $719.99, or AU$1,199 SIM-free directly from Samsung, but exact pricing for other markets is currently unclear. In the UK, that’s a huge price jump over last year’s handset, which cost £689 at its launch.  The phone was officially launched on February 25, but won’t be in your hands until March 16.  If you live in the United States, you won’t be able to preorder your phone until March 1. The Samsung Galaxy S9 doesn’t offer any major improvements over the display on the Galaxy S8 – there’s sadly no in-screen fingerprint scanner.

It’s a 5.8-inch QHD+ Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1440 x 2960. That equals 567 pixels per inch, which should allow for a super-crisp and clear picture for the high-end flagship device. It has a screen ratio of 18.5:9, with slightly slimmer bezels at the top and bottom of the screen to allow for the same size screen in a smaller body than the Galaxy S8.  There’s still a glass back, a rounded display on the front and slim bezels, with the aim of merging the screen almost seamlessly with the body of the handset. Samsung claims the design improvements for the phone include the iris scanner hole being hidden, as well as less bezel at the top and bottom of the display.

The Galaxy S9 only features a single lens on the rear of the phone, but Samsung has packed in lots of improvements in its effort to ‘reimagine’ the phone camera. There’s a 12MP rear sensor with optical image stabilization, and a lot of the other features we’ve come to expect from high-end Samsung devices. One of the biggest upgrades is new dual-aperture technology, with the camera automatically adjusting the aperture depending on the scene you’re shooting, much like the human eye adapts to changing light.

This is all really good news, but I would be remiss if I didn’t tell you about the Galaxy X.  Or at least that’s what Samsung is calling it.  Which is their foldable device that we’ve been anticipating.  The problem?  We still don’t have a lot of details.  Samsung had anticipated unveiling the X back in 2017.  At CES 2018, Samsung mobile chief DJ Koh suggested that it was “difficult” to talk about the launch, but that Samsung was working on it.  Koh has released some new details, but it’s still pretty vague.  What do we know?  It’s foldable.  We also know that Samsung has filed a ton of patents for foldable smartphones.  But Koh wouldn’t even say if there was a 2018 release date in the works.

In their latest quarterly earnings, Samsung did note that they are planning to manufacture a new generation of foldable OLED displays in the near future.  That whole concept kind of blows my mind, if I’m being honest.  So I am really looking forward to what these look like.  Samsung is also giving consideration to killing the Galaxy S numbering system.  Like with Apple, instead of a Galaxy S10, we might see a Galaxy X (which is what the foldable phone is being referred to as).  Based on this information, it’s too early to get excited about the foldable phone.
