Apple is reportedly working on another science fiction TV show for their growing catalog. This is part of their streaming service, which has yet to be announced. For something unannounced, they are building quite the catalog, aren’t they? While it’s unclear why Apple hasn’t made this announcement, I think it’s good PR, regardless. There is a lot of people out there talking about it, and they’re getting some big-name actors as well as projects.
Their latest project is going to be based on the Foundation book series, which was written by Isaac Asimov. This particular series will be written and produced by David S. Goyer and Josh Friedman, who will also be the show-runners. David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Marcy Ross will serve as executive producers.
There’s very little doubt that Asimov’s Foundation series launched dozens, if not hundreds of science fiction plots over the years. It was written during the golden age of science fiction – which started in the 1920s and ran through until the 1950s. It was Foundation that built the stereotypical science fiction story, which you’ve come to love in franchises like Star Wars, Star Trek, and even The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. But it doesn’t stop there, think of Call of Duty: Black Ops. Without Foundation, we wouldn’t have those kinds of games.
The challenge for Apple is going to be putting this story into a TV show. If you’re not familiar with Foundation, it includes 15 books. What’s great about it is that Apple has the money and the ability to take such a huge project and turn it into an amazing TV series.
This is going to be Apple’s first step into the sci-fi space, but as you are well aware, there have been many adaptations made over the last few years. And this is just the start if you think about it. Before this, we’ve had Altered Carbon, The Man in the High Castle, Game of Thrones, and the Handmaid’s Tale. These have all become incredibly popular TV series, so it’s not that this is an impossible task, but it is one that will be challenging for sure.
This is a great time for TV right now. Amazon is going to start filming it’s billion-dollar The Lord of the Rings spin-off series soon. FX, Fox, and others are hard at work taking various Marvel and DC comics and making them into TV shows. Not to mention, Netflix is doing a pretty good job with some of the Marvel TV shows as well. There may be people out there who don’t consider these to be sci-fi, but if you look at what some of these characters are doing, it’s hard to make that argument.
That said, it’s going to be a long time before this show is available for production. I say a long time, but I’m expecting a couple of years. I think that this project is going to be a big one for Apple, but also extremely successful. Stay tuned for more details on that as the project progresses.
