the grand tour

the grand tour

When a TV show or movie is really good, it often gets made into some form of a video game.  Perhaps it’s an easy way for the “owner” of that piece of entertainment to make more money.  Or maybe its altruistic and people want to bring their creation to the masses.  Whatever the answer this time, it’s now happening with Amazon. Amazon scored huge when they picked up the former Top Gear crew for its own series – The Grand Tour.  But now, it’s time for the crew to make that leap from your TV screen straight into a video game version.  Amazon made this announcement this week and has indicated that The Grand Tour Game will be available on both XBox One and PlayStation 4.

Of course, the game will closely mimic the show, offering players the chance to relive some of the cars, locations, and challenges featured on the first three seasons of the show – which is currently available on Amazon Prime Video. In addition to single-player action, there will also be a four-player, split-screen multiplayer option, as well. Every time a new Grand Tour episode drops during its third season, you’ll get access to new cars, tracks, and challenges from that episode.

Before you make any judgments on the game.  It isn’t just a reskinned version of Gran Turismo or something like that.  Amazon Game Studios in Seattle created The Grand Tour Game, using some Amazon specific technology.  This was in addition to their in-house web services.  And while the graphics themselves might not be as good as Forza or Gran Turismo, they are pretty good.

What we don’t necessarily know is when exactly the game will be released.  We do know, however, that it will be delivered episodically alongside season three of the show.  It will feature four-player split screen support and voice over from Clarkson, Hammons, and May. The game will also incorporate footage from the show with “seamless” transitions between live action and gameplay. While a brief peek at gameplay in the above trailer makes The Grand Tour Game look like a straightforward racer, Amazon Game Studios promises “over-the-top power-ups like High Tea, which spills tire-shredding cups and saucers, and More Horsepowers, which lets you blow past the competition.”
