With the launch of Red Dead Redemption 2 imminent, there are a couple of things that you might want to know about first.  Even if you’ve already preloaded the game on your XBox One or PlayStation 4. To start, Rockstar has confirmed that there is a “Day-One Title Update”.  If you’ve already downloaded the game then it should be installed and ready for you.  If you purchased the disc, you will have to wait.  That said, it won’t be required for play at launch, but it is recommended.  The update is full of improvements and bug fixes, which will definitely help improve the game.

Along with that, Rockstar has developed a Red Dead Redemption 2 Companion App that allows you to connect to your game and get updates in real-time. There is a map that will allow you to pan around and set waypoints to visit in the game.  It also keeps track of your character’s information and stats.  The app is already available live in Apple’s App Store and in the Google Play store.

The Red Dead Redemption 2 Companion connects directly with your PlayStation®4 and Xbox One® as you play to deliver a real-time interactive map with pan and zoom functions, helping your exploration and discovery throughout the expansive open-world. The Companion also delivers your in-game Journal, the full game manual, an optional comprehensive strategy guide and more.

If you’ve never played this game, you’re probably wondering what it is.  Red Dead Redemption 2 takes place in 1899, 12 years before the events of the original game.  But don’t worry if you didn’t play the original game either.  You’ll be able to follow along with the story just fine.  The game follows the character, Arthur. Arthur is part of a tight-knit group that follows a charismatic leader named Dutch Van Der Linde. Dutch’s main goal in life is to stay as far away from civilization as possible and to live life as a free man. But at the turn of the 19th century, with cities and towns expanding across America, that’s not an easy thing to do. The group is constantly on the move, avoiding the law while searching for the one big score that will set them up with enough cash to finally get far, far away from the rest of the world.

In many games, the activities that take place on the side feel different from the actual plot.  In Red Dead Redemption 2, that kind of disconnection doesn’t exist.  For most of the game, your only real goal is to survive.  The characters are in constant need of money and other resources.  In order to obtain these necessities, many crimes are committed. In fact, the entire premise of the game is to get more of these resources, and thus every move you make contributes to these actions.

All of that said, Red Dead Redemption 2 has some incredible detail and appears to be crafted by nothing short of experts. As we learn more about how games are made, we should keep in mind the human cost for the enjoyment you will get from playing the game.  Throughout all of its games, Rockstar attempts to make its games both massive as well as lifelike.  In many ways, Red Dead Redemption 2 feels like an incredible combination of these two goals.
