Regardless of my feelings for a particular person or side, I love hearing a story where a battle was essentially won. Like I said, even if I don’t particularly like the person who is winning the battle. But I have to say, there was a war raging around Donald Trump yesterday and in neither situation did he come out on top. If you’ve been living under a rock for the last 24 hours, I’ll catch you up to speed. Trump met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, and Michael Cohen testified before the House Oversight Committee. Something my father always used to say to me comes to mind – if you have nothing to hide, then the truth can’t hurt you. I wonder if Trump had those thoughts yesterday as well?
North Korea
Trump and Kim were scheduled to meet and talk yesterday, in an attempt to work out the details related to nuclear disarmament. But talks collapsed unexpectedly between the two, when Trump refused to lift economic sanctions on North Korea. More specifically, the agreement was ready to sign by both parties, but Kim refused to close North Korea’s only nuclear facility, which meant Trump was going to walk. There’s part of me that wants to cheer for him and say “good for you”. But then there’s part of me that remembers how this all started. Perhaps the world wouldn’t be in the situation its in, had Trump not instigated Un in the first place. I mean, who can forget the Rocket M
All-in-all, this was a failure of epic proportions. Trump flew 20 hours to Vietnam in order to help North Korea with denuclearization, but ultimately the two chose to walk away. The immediate results were felt in the financial markets of Asia, with South Korea’s stock market falling sharply just before the close of trading to end down 1.8%. The South Korean won also slipped, and Japan’s main Nikkei 225 share index ended down 0.8%. Not huge numbers, but certainly big enough to have an impact.
Michael Cohen
Also taking place yesterday was Trump’s former lawyer, Michael Cohen testified before the House Oversight Committee, where a lot was revealed. Now, many are saying that it’s just speculation or even opinion. But that’s why they’ve asked him to testify, isn’t it? Please give us your opinion on the events that we’re investigating? That said, Cohen lost his credibility when it was discovered that he had previously lied to Congress. But he was lying to Congress in order to cover up some pretty big issues.
But yesterday was different. Cohen’s testimony felt different. After all, the man has nothing to lose at this point. His testimony was matter-of-fact, where he drew a pretty awful picture of the man who used to employ him. He also went on record indicating that Trump is a liar, a conman and a cheat. Cohen has indicated that he regrets and is remorseful for the role that he played in all of it.
But what might be the most interesting is how Cohen characterizes Trump. In fact, he suggests that if Trump doesn’t win the 2020 election, then there won’t be a peaceful transition of power. To me, this sounds like he’s going to dig in his heels, scream fake news and start squatting in the White House. How much of a sore loser would he look like if that were the case? But what Cohen is suggesting is far larger than just Trump not wanting to leave the White House. This has implications across the nation.
I will wrap up this post with a comment made by Cohen, which I think describes the current political climate.
“I pray the country doesn’t make the same mistakes that I have made or pay the heavy price that my family and I are paying.”
