House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi is concerned that President Donald Trump will not voluntarily step down unless Democrats win by a big enough margin in the 2020 presidential election. That is if he doesn’t contest the results. Before I get into this too much, how is it even possible for him to not step down? I mean, of course, he can contest the results because America is (the last time I checked) a democracy. But what he can’t do is just continue to be president even when someone else has won the election. But I guess that’s what Pelosi is concerned about, and what she’s encouraging people and the party to be prepared for come 2020.

In fact, Pelosi is worried that Trump will “poison the public mind and challenge each of the races”, if the Democrats didn’t win by an overwhelming majority in 2020. In 2018, the Democrats picked up a net gain of 40 seats, which is the largest Democratic House gain since 1974.

What can the Democrats do in order to win enough of a margin to prevent this? According to Pelosi, the answer is to own the center left, and to also own the mainstream.

“Our passions were for health care, bigger paychecks, cleaner government — a simple message. We did not engage in some of the other exuberances that exist in our party.”

Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House

When she says “other exuberances” she is referring to things like “Medicare for all” and the Green New Deal. These kinds of proposals are a bit more to the left than left center. In order to combat the Trump-machine, this is a really good strategy. I mean, Trump will use these kinds of proposals (and anything that he can) in order to devalue any message that the Democrats might be trying to push forward. It’s almost guaranteed that he would paint these as socialist or communist ideals when that’s not really the truth. In fact, there are many countries in the world who have a version of these kinds of proposals, and while they may be different than the United States in principle, fundamentally there is more in common. What is very interesting is that Pelosi appears to be embracing the idea that her role is to oppose Trump. She definitely seems to be comfortable going to battle with him, and in return, she is the only Democrat that Trump hasn’t given a nickname to.

The scary part is the picture that Pelosi is painting. Can you imagine the president simply refusing to leave his post? Even after the results are in? I mean, part of me wants to hear what his tweets will look like if and when that were to happen. Pelosi has also indicated that she doesn’t trust the president to respect the results of any election, short of an overwhelming defeat. This is amplified by the idea that Trump has repeatedly claimed Democratic voter fraud already, and as a nation, Pelosi believes that we shouldn’t play into the hype.

What is also scary is the fact that Trump seems to be energized by all the confrontation. Pelosi remains committed to avoiding impeachment, but it is clear that she is starting to lose her patience. The next few years will definitely be interesting on the political stage. For the sake of the nation, I certainly hope it doesn’t play out the way that Pelosi is predicting and describing.
