Technology

An investigation conducted by the Federal Communications Commission identified the causes of what it is now calling “unacceptably slow restoration of wireless service” after Hurricane Michael. For those of you who don’t remember, Hurricane Michael was a Category 5 hurricane that raged across Florida this past October, killing dozens and causing approximately $25 billion in damage. In some areas, wireless service was down for over a week, which left many residents without a means of communicating at the time. As we move to a more technologically reliant society, service providers need to be aware of that reliance so as to not cause further disruption or harm.

Sports

The NCAA Men’s Basketball Rules Committee has proposed moving the 3-point line back to the international basketball distance, which is more than one foot farther than the current line. The international 3-point line is 22 feet, 1¾ inches, while the current 3-point line is 20 feet, 9 inches. It was moved from 19 feet, 9 inches prior to the 2008-09 season. This proposal will have to be approved by the Playing Rules Oversight Panel on June 5. If passed, it would go into effect next season in Division I schools, and because of the potential financial impact, it wouldn’t be implemented in Division II and III schools until 2020-2021.

Politics

House Democrats issued subpoenas this week for President Donald Trump’s tax records. This move is likely to end up in court, as no one anticipates he will hand them over willingly. Ways and Means Chairman Richard Neal (D-Mass.) is spearheading this effort and is demanding the filings to both Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig.

“While I do not take this step lightly, I believe this action gives us the best opportunity to succeed and obtain the requested material. I sincerely hope that the Treasury Department will furnish the requested material within the next week so the committee can quickly begin its work.”

Madonna released a new single, “Crave” with Swae Lee, who you might know from Rae Sremmurd. This is her third song leading up to her forthcoming “Madame X” album. This song follows “Medellin” and “I Rise”. Two more songs are anticipated to be released before the album’s June 14th release date. The “Madame X” tour will visit Las Vegas, Boston, Philadelphia, Miami, Lisbon, London, and Paris. Dates and details on those cities to come in the near future.

Movies & Television

As you know, Netflix doesn’t really care about ratings. In fact, they don’t report viewership numbers to investors, entertainment reporters, Hollywood or even fans. This can be incredibly frustrating when popular shows get canceled out of the blue. But in a step to move towards transparency, Netflix published a series of top 10 lists for the most-watched content in the United Kingdom. What might surprise you is that topping the list for April is David Attenborough’s narrated nature series Our Planet. Coming in second was the cute romcom movie The Perfect Date. It’s being reported that you might start to see these lists as early next week, but what information we will actually see remains unclear.
