iPhone 5s vs. iPhone 5

iPhone 5s vs. iPhone 5

 thinkdiff

Apple has not thought different in years. They announced the iPhone 5s and the iPhone 5c. Not only did all the leaks already tell you in great detail what they will look like and how they will run but there was no excitement. Remember when you had no clue what Apple was going to do until they were ready? Remember when Apple was the innovator rather than an imitator of Android software? Remember a time when didn’t just blatantly steal tweaks from the jailbreak community Cydia and call it a new feature of “iOS (insert number here)?   Neither does Wall Street or soon to be ex Apple loyalist such as myself. iPhone 5s and the iPhone 5c are meant to be successors to the iPhone 5, however, there is little innovation. It’s faster? Well, gee and what else? oh, fingerprint reader? umm. No, thanks. The 3 letter Gmen have enough information to work with already.

I know this sounds like a Android Fanboy writeup but however. I love Apple and it breaks my heart that hey are getting left in the wind. If they do not do something and do something fast they will become the Microsoft of the tech world. It is not too long ago that Microsoft was the Smartphone king with Windows Mobile. They didn’t innovate and Apple stepped in to change the game. You’re on notice  from the people who were once your supporter. The early adopters are no longer looking to you for future.… Read the rest

Apple gets a taste of its own medicine. Sued over use of patents.

Apple gets a taste of its own medicine. Sued over use of patents.

Seems like Apple is getting a needed sampling of its own medicine. A Taiwanese university has sued Apple for infringing on its voice recognition patents. National  Cheng Kung University says that the technology in the iPhone 4S and the New iPad use for Siri infringes on two of the school’s U.S. patents. The two patents deal with speech recognition technology. The suit was filed in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas.

Yama Chen the legal manager of National Cheng Kung said “We filed that lawsuit in the Texas court because it processes faster and its rulings are usually in favor of patent owners and the compensations are usually higher.”

The university is seeking undisclosed damages based on Apple’s U.S. sales  of devices that incorporate Siri. They also want an injunction on Apple’s use of Siri. That’s not all though, the National Cheng Kung University is looking into Google and Microsoft. They seem to think that their voice-to-text features might infringe upon its technology as well.… Read the rest

Jeans + iPhone = a genius idea or foolery

Jeans + iPhone = a genius idea or foolery

Jeans with a pocket for your iPhone may seem a bit much but then again why not. I’m thinking that it is the most nerdy thing I have seen since the BookBook by TwelveSouth for the iPad and iPhone.  Although I can see the appeal because you don’t have room in your pockets. The convenient thing about the pocket is that you can use the phone while it is in the pocket.  The DELTA415 Wearcom jeans from Alphyn Industries let you hold your phone and look stylish.  The transparent iPhone pouch has a protective denim cover flap that can be zipped shut. The iPhone pocket also has button hole for your earphones. The jeans the same price as a pair of nice diesel jeans at $160. You can get a pair here and while you’re there pick up the sweatshirt below.

IBM says Sorry Siri

IBM says Sorry Siri

If you work for IBM guess what? Don’t bring your iPhone 4S to work with you. If you decide to bring it anyway you might want to turn off one of its best features. Siri has been blocked at the tech giants offices. Big Blue is concerned that the digital assistant keeps what you say in server somewhere that only Apple has access to. What’s more they are also worried that you might tell her somethings that you should keep to yourself. I am frankly surprised that more companies are not blocking Siri from their networks due to concerns over privacy.

Siri sends anything you ask to a data center in North Carolina. No one knows what Apple is doing with the data. No one knows how the data will be used. No one knows how long the data is kept. The generally thought is that the data is being used to make Siri better but who really knows. Siri is still technically in beta so anything that may or does go wrong can be written off. Apple’s iPhone Software License Agreement clearly says: “When you use Siri or Dictation, the things you say will be recorded and sent to Apple in order to convert what you say into text,” Apple says. IBM CIO Jeanette Horan said that “The company worries that the spoken queries might be stored somewhere.”

Facebook buys Instagram: This is how to transfer your pictures out.

Facebook buys Instagram: This is how to transfer your pictures out.

20120411-112135.jpg

When I heard that Facebook had brought my beloved Instagram; I was shocked, angry, sad, and finally at peace. Someone told me those are similar emotions felt when you lose a loved one. It was enough to open the floodgates to Android. I was happy for that move but to sell out to Facebook is taking a big plunge into the unknown. Everyone is aware of the privacy issues Facebook has. That is the reason I hardly use the social network.

Instagram is a model of what all programs hope to be. Loved and valuable. Instagram managed to attract not only a loyal but dare I say rabid fan base. The side effect of that success was the release of a plethora of clones on the AppStore harping for some of the spotlight. None however could manage to shine brighter than the original.

What I noticed right away was that Instagram had no advertisement. No pop-ups, not so much as a in app upgrade feature. The app it’s self was free to download. So, that’s millions of users on a nonmonetized app. Surely there must be a plan to cash in. It seems there was a plan brewing behind the curtain. One wonders how many meetings Instagram had with Facebook before papers were signed. Was the release of an Android app a stipulation of the deal or was it a show of good will? Did millions of downloads overnight jack up the asking price?… Read the rest
