Modern Warfare 3 sold 12.3 million copies for a profit of $738 million in a week?
Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare series has once again broken media records. The best part about the 3rd installment is that the records it broke were established by its predecessor.
Last week it sold 6.5 million copies of the game for a profit of $400 million during its launch weekend alone. That was a new a sales record.
It did not stop there for the hot FPS. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is now the fastest-selling video game in history. Even the beloved Grand Theft Auto did not sell this well. In just one week on the market Modern Warfare to sold a ridicules 12.3 million copies. That easily makes it the biggest launch of all time in volume. In terms of cash that one week is estimated to be $738 million in revenue for Activision.
The game was released to every system at $60 a pop. Leading all sales was the Xbox 360 version of the game with over 7 million copies sold. The PS3 sold 4.8 million copies the Wii and the PC had the rest of the sales. Side note: Who would why this game on a non HD, limited control Wii? The 7 million copies sold on Microsoft’s Xbox 360 is a new sales record for game on one single system. The record had belonged to Call of Duty: Black Ops that had sold 5.8 million.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is a great game that actully lives up to the hype.… Read the rest
Joe Paterno: Fired from Penn State, The school he built. What is his legacy now?
It had to happen sooner rather than later but no one at the start of the season would have imagined this is how it would end. The house that Joe built has kicked him out to the curb. I will not enter the moral reasons for which he was fired. He should be fired for not following up but let us not forget, he did report it. That is neither here or there. What I will discuss is respect. After so many years and the fact that he was not the one that abused anyone, he should have been allowed to complete the rest of the season. I think 46 years loyalty can buy you just 3 more months.
Paterno won more games than any other major college coach in history. He told a grand jury investigation that when he was informed in 2002 of his assistant coach’s alleged sexual abuse of a boy, he passed the information on to the athletic director but did not follow up. The alleged abuse continued for several more years.
Assistant Coach Jerry Sandusky was charged on Saturday with sexually abusing eight young boys over a period of nearly 15 years. Two university officials were also charged with failing to report an incident when it happened in 2002.
Over 1,000 protesting Penn State University students protested on campus yesterday to share that same sentiment. They were chanting “Hell no, Joe won’t go” and “We want Joe back.” One student said: “I think it’s only fair to let him (Paterno) ride out the season because this is the house that Joe built.” Police and state troopers in riot gear attempted to clear the streets.… Read the rest

Watch The Throne: Jay-Z & Kaye West (Yes, there’s a tech story somewhere in there)
This week Jay-Z and Kanye West unveiled their long-awaited collaboration, Watch the Throne. Why is this on the front page of a tech heavy blog? The Watch The Throne rappers debuted around the world exclusively on Apple’s iTunes. The album’s timing and title are perfect when referring to Jay-Z. He not only topped Forbes list as hip-hop’s top earner with $37 million in the past 12 months but it’s his fourth time doing so in the last five years.
Many other artist have released exclusives on iTunes. What makes Jay-Z different? Well he sees technology as a good bet into more markets and just good business. This is not Jay-Z’s jump into the tech world as an media. He tried to buy Comcast’s G4 with Sean Combs and film executive Harvey Weinstein in 2007. That did not work out but a deal with Adult Swim seems to have worked. It has been confirmed by sources at Turner Broadcasting, Cartoon Network’s parent company.
What will interesting is to see if Jay-Z dives deeper into other forms of media and technology. He already has the clubs (40/40), the sports team (NY Nets), the record label (RocNation) and the clothing company (Rocawear). The only thing missing is movies and TV. With the Turner deal TV can somewhat be checked off. Maybe he could do a Game of Thrones ad campaign tie in or a MacBook Air RocNation limited edition. Wait never mind Apple does not do such things.… Read the rest
Race in Gaming: Big deal or big to do about nothing
I recently read an article about race in video games. Rather lack of race in games. The well written article got me thinking. Is race really a big deal? I mean after all its just a video game. Well not really. I think it speaks more to the psyche of a generation. I mean thanks to President Obama little African Americans as young as grade school know it’s not only possible but doable to become Commander & Chief of the United States.
When you play Madden stereotypes are very evident in the game. Is it fair that most NBA players are black. Or 90% of movies have an all white cast plus the one token black cast member? No but that’s the way it is. Something’s can’t be helped without compromising story. Games on the other hand can. I think we read way more into this than there needs to be when it comes to games. Games would surely benefit from more diversity but before it can make it to the finish product the makers need to be diverse.
There has to be more producers, developers, designers, publishers and for that matter diverse game companies in general before change can take place. The reason is people like to see their likeness in all that the produce. Be honest, the first thing you do in a game with character customization is make the character as close a representation to you as possible.… Read the rest
