AT&T

AT&T has done it again.  In an attempt to win over more customers, they are offering a pretty sweet deal.  Today, they announced a new package for it’s unlimited Choice customers, which will give you access to over 60 DirecTV channels for only $10 a month more.  But not only that, they’re also offering you unlimited data as part of this deal.  The regular bundle only costs $60 a month, which means you are getting an incredible deal for a relatively low price.  This bundle was previously being offered for $100 in recent months.  So why did they drop the price?  My guess is they are having a hard time competing with the numerous live streaming options that are available

Is it time to cut the cord?

I am a big fan of cutting the cord, and I don’t care what anyone says, but it’s just not worth it to have cable or satellite.  I have written some articles on this, and to be honest, it’s a fine line.  You could make the argument either way, but I don’t think that it’s worth it.  Why?  Because there are so many options to stream online.  So many options!  And typically at a lower cost than a cable or satellite package.

I was listening to a podcast the other day, and one of the hosts is absolutely against cord cutting.  Which I think is a generational thing.  I don’t mean to sound trite, but there are people of a certain age who are set in their ways.  And that’s fine.  If it works for them, I have no issue with it.  But the move by AT&T gives you the ability to keep the TV option, and increase your streaming capabilities.  Possibly giving them even more money if you buy a streaming option from them.

watching tv

But if you are like me, and you’re not home much, having the ability to watch what you want, when you want and how you want is very appealing.  Sure, I have to wait for it to have aired on TV, but I might not have time for two or three weeks before I’m able to sit down and watch that show.  I might want to lay in bed and watch it on my iPad.  Or maybe I want to watch it on my big screen TV.  But I like the idea that I can do it my way.  And on my terms.  As someone who doesn’t always like to be told what to do, this is extremely appealing to me.

Which also means, that this deal isn’t.  Meaning, I would take the unlimited data, but I don’t necessarily want the TV option.  Or maybe it is appealing to me, and I ignore the TV part of it.  But, if I was interested in this deal, I would first ask myself whether or not I could get the unlimited data elsewhere for the same price, though.

I wonder how low we will see these TV package drop?  Will they keep going and going and going until they are obsolete?  Or will they go the other way?  And start to get more expensive for the people that use TV?  I recently cut the cable, cold turkey.  I had been holding onto a basic cable package as a way to watch news, live sports and a bit as a safety net.  Yes, I know, I’m contradicting myself here.  I have always said that there is value in having it, but I still think the cost-benefit analysis works in favour of cord cutting.

I’m interested to see how this rolls out in the next couple of years.  Will more people cut the cord or will they get back into traditional TV?  Especially with more and more companies offering competitive pricing and online add-ons to allow you to stream through their system.
