Beyonce

There’s a rumour going around that Beyonce is going to be singing in the next James Bond movie.  My first thought was that she was going to be a Bond girl, and then I corrected myself.  Because not all artists who have been involved in the James Bond movies have been female.  And, well, that doesn’t necessarily make you a Bond girl.  But that is how my  brain works sometimes.  No Bond film is complete without having some kind of signature song.  And it looks like Beyonce might be next on the list.  Adele performed “Sky Fall” for the last movie, so this kind of makes sense, doesn’t it?  But I am a bit surprised that she hasn’t already done this.  Aren’t you?

Daniel Craig (yum) has confirmed that another Bond film is on the way, and that he will be returning to the role.  Which will be great.  So if Beyonce is going to perform for the movie, it will be nothing short of amazing.  It is also rumoured that Beyonce reached out to Adele prior to her meeting with the film producers.  Now there is the concern that it won’t be a hit.  After all, not many of the Bond theme songs have been.  But Beyonce is big enough that it might not matter.  She can make anything sound good, and likely make it a hit.

But this is just a rumour, so there is a possibility that it won’t happen.  Obviously, we hope it will.  Let’s talk about some of the other artists who performed Bond songs over the years.  There have been a lot, so I’ll keep my list narrowed down to mostly women.

Shirley Bassey

  • Shirley Bassey – Goldfinger, Diamonds are Forever and Moonraker
  • Nancy Sinatra – You Only Live Twice
  • Lulu – The Man with the Golden Gun
  • Carly Simon – The Spy Who Loved Me
  • Sheena Easton – For Your Eyes Only
  • Rita Coolidge – Octopussy
  • Gladys Knight – License to Kill
  • Tina Turner – Golden Eye
  • Sheryl Crow – Tomorrow Never Dies
  • Madonna – Die Another Day
  • Alicia Keys (along with Jack White) – Quantum of Solace
  • Adele – Skyfall

All of those are some amazing singers.  Which only makes sense that Beyonce would be in the running.  But like I said before, why has it taken so long?  Beyonce has been around for several years now, so it’s not like she’s a new artist.  But I wonder if it has to do with her sound.  It has changed over the years into something a bit more soulful.  Perhaps its more in line with what the film execs are looking for.

That being said, when I look at the above list, it makes me wonder.  Cheryl Crow?  Madonna?  I’m not saying they aren’t great artists, but it just makes me wonder.  I feel like they don’t fit the idea of who should be singing these songs.  And maybe it’s just a picture I have in my head.  Adele, for example fits that picture quite well.  And Beyonce is the same “picture” in my head also.  Madonna just doesn’t.  All that being said, I think it will only enhance the movie.  It’s a win-win.  For both Beyonce and the film, if she does end up singing the theme song.  Only time will tell if this is a rumour or not.  And if it is just a rumour, I look forward to another post about who the artist actually is.
