If you’re a car buff, then you probably think that electric vehicles are on the boring side.  But Tesla has managed to change that.  I think of a small vehicle, mostly for city driving, that doesn’t have much going for it in the way of looks.  For all you car buffs out there, would you consider a Tesla over a Ferrari, Porsche, Mercedes or a McLaren?  If the results of Motor Trend’s “World’s Greatest Drag Race” are any indication, the answer should be “yes”.

The race has become an annual event for the automotive publication.  It pits the fastest cars against each other in a single quarter mile sprint to crown a champion.  This years race included:

  • Ferrari 488 GTB
  • Porsche 911 Turbo S
  • Nissan GT-R NISMO
  • Aston Martin DB11, and;
  • Tesla Model S P100Dferrari 488 gtb

The reason for choosing the Tesla is because it is slightly different than the other cars. What’s fascinating is that the P100D actually was triumphant, edging out the Ferrari and Porsche by just fractions of a second.  Maybe it shouldn’t be fascinating because, according to Motor Trend, the P100D already holds the record for fastest 0-60 acceleration.  But, if this was a longer race, the Tesla likely wouldn’t have won.  The winner would have likely been the Ferrari.

What can you take away from this?  Well, it’s clear that electric vehicles have a huge advantage when it comes to acceleration.  How else do these cars compare? The Ferrari 488 GTB starts at $245,000 where as the P100D costs about $135,000.  Cost aside, the Tesla has four doors, and it seats up to 5 adults as well as 2 children.  How can it hold so many people? Whereas the Ferrari is only a two seater.  Obviously, the Ferrari is more of a sports car, but it feels like Tesla is trying to compete.

It’s of value to note that while the P100 D kills it when it comes to accelerating speed, it should be noted that it tapers off once you get past 60 mph.  The Ferrari, McLaren and Porsche can all hit 70 and 80 mph faster than Tesla.  Like I mentioned earlier, the P100D would also lose out to those other cars when it comes to a longer race.

If you are a car buff, chances are, you’re still not going to buy a Tesla.  Why?  Well, I’m not saying any of this to sound negative towards Tesla, but they just can’t compare to the other cars, in my opinion.  There’s something about the “muscle” behind the other cars, that you just don’t get out of the Tesla.  And that’s not necessarily a bad thing.  I’m just not sure that this race is going to translate into sales for Tesla.  I think that people who want a Tesla, will buy a Tesla.  But if you’re into Ferrari or Porsche, there’s a good chance that you are going to stick with those brands.

What do you think?  Does this change your mind about Tesla?  Yes, it kicks ass in the 0-60 category from an acceleration perspective, but if you’re looking for a fast car, are you going to buy a Tesla?  Especially when the car can’t accelerate quickly after 60.
