The popular live trivia game, HQ Trivia, has had some pretty big jackpots lately.  When I say popular, I mean, insanely popular.  What’s great is that now HQ is adding a new social feature – marking this one of the first major updates to the app.  Before I go on, I just want to say that overall, the app is pretty good.  So while I’m all for updates, I want to make sure that this isn’t going to turn into another Snapchat or Instagram.  By that I mean, it’s not going to get an update every week, giving us more and more unnecessary features.  You be the judge on this one – the app is rolling out a new “Friends on HQ” feature that allows users to search for friends and see direct performance comparisons.

Is this something you would find useful?  The new feature allows users to search for friends and connect with them. From there, friends will be able to see each others’ performance and keep track of factors such as games played, wins, and high scores, as seen in the screenshots above.  This will definitely make the game more interesting if you can see how your friends are performing, but will this additional competition make the game more social?

If you’re in the middle of a live game, you can swipe to the right to see a list of friends who are still in the game, as well as a full list of all users who are still playing.  The goal is to connect users with friends and family once inside the app.  Once users connect, they will be able to keep track of how everyone is doing.  Hence where the competition comes in.  Will this connection be based on your contacts from your phone, or will you (gasp) have to connect to Facebook to find your friends?

If its the latter, I would caution you against it.  Even if its the former option, you have to be careful that you aren’t giving HQ access to private information.  When I asked earlier if this is something that you would find useful, I should have asked if this is a good idea.  Given all the issues that tech companies are having with keeping data private, this is definitely something that you should be careful about.  Like I said – how is it connecting you to your friends?

Because this is an incredibly popular app, HQ says that this is just one of the new features that it has planned. In fact, the company is teasing that this update will serve as the “basis” for new features coming in the future.  While I love the game, and I love the app, I don’t like when things get away from their original purpose.  Which is why new features will certainly change the game, so I’m not sure how much I’m going to love this app in the future.  But that doesn’t mean that you can’t win a lot of money on the app.  This week, the game will be hosted by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, and you have a chance of winning up to $300,000.  So invite your friends and try to win that prize.
