If you’re an automaker, and you want to succeed in China, you’re going to need to make your car electric.  China has a strict EV plan.  Which means, if you live in a city like Beijing, you need to apply for the license lottery if you want to own a car.  To us in North America, that sounds ridiculous, but when you think about the number of people in Beijing, then this kind of makes sense.  Which is why it makes sense that Maybach has unveiled a concept car that is specifically for the country’s ultra-rich.  Yes, it’s all electric and is a bit too opulent for my taste, but we will talk about that later on.

The name of the car is quite a mouthful – the Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury is a four-wheel drive electric vehicle.  The car comes with an emphasis on passenger comfort – including its own tea service.  This is where I think it’s a bit opulent.  Is a tea service necessary in your car? Maybe I’m thinking in American terms, but seriously?  It’s not just a cup holder for your teacup, it’s a full-on tea service – including teapot, what appears to be a kettle, but I’m unclear on it, a container for cream and even tea cups!  I can’t get over this if I’m being honest.

And the opulence doesn’t end there – the rest of the interior has fancy ebony wood, also known as “Magic Wood”.  The “Magic Wood” is used in the tea set as well as on the doors.  The seats are stitched white leather while there are rose gold and shiny aluminum accents throughout the interior. The way this car is designed, it’s not for you to drive yourself, but for you to be driven in.  The driver will have two 12.3” displays to help them navigate the streets.  The cockpit is relatively minimalistic, with the emphasis being put on the passengers so they can feel as comfortable as possible.  I like this concept, but I still feel that a tea set is too much.

The crossover will output 750 horsepower from four motors and have a range of over 200 miles. Under all that leather and Magic Wood is an 80kWh battery pack that thanks to CCS DC fast charging that supports 350kW, can suck up 60 miles of range in five minutes. Since the driver will take care of all of that, the interior of the crossover looks like something you’d never want to leave. And hey – maybe it can double as your accommodation.  My guess, though, is that if you’re buying one of these, you don’t need for it to double as a place to live.

There is an odd feature included – a trunk.  Mercedes said that the design is based on a luxury sedan and SUV.  But, I mean you probably don’t care about the trunk because you’re too busy drinking your tea, while you are chauffeured around town, with your seat reclined. This isn’t exactly my taste in a vehicle, but I am interested to know if it’s something you would drive if money wasn’t a concern?
