Get Out

Jordan Peele

The Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA) held its annual conference this past weekend, and during the conference, they announced the winners of the prestigious Nebula Awards.  For those of you who don’t know, the Nebula awards have been described as the most important of the American science fiction awards.  It’s also been described as the science fiction and fantasy equivalent of the Emmy Awards.  There were two big awards handed out, including the award for best novel, which went to N.K. Jemisin’s The Stone Sky.

The Stone Sky is the final installment of Jemisin’s Broken Earth trilogy and is about a far-future Earth that experiences periodic, devastating apocalyptic events. It’s a story that establishes Jemisin as one of fantasy’s best writers, and well, SFWA certainly agrees.  Other winners include Martha Wells’ first Murderbot book – All Systems Red for Best Novella, Kelly Robson’s, A Human Stain, for Best Novelette, and Rebecca Roanhorse’s Welcome to Your Authentic Indian Experience, for Best Short Story.

But the real winner, in my opinion, is the recipient of the Ray Bradbury Award for Outstanding Dramatic Presentation.  Which was won by Jordan Peele’s film Get Out.  Earlier in the year, Peele became the first black nominee to win the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.  He also earned that same award at the Writers Guild of American and Critic’s Choice awards.  Get Out also went on to earn trophies for Best Feature and Best Director at the Film Independent Spirit Awards.

Below is a list of all the nominees, and winners (listed in bold):
