iphone xWhat will the next iPhone be called?  There was an iPhone 7, and then Apple released an iPhone 8, but they skipped 9 completely.  Which is weird, isn’t it?  So when it comes to the next iPhone – will it be a 9, an XI, or an X2?  The latter combines Roman Numerals with numbers, so at this point, it’s anyone’s guess.  In this article, we will speculate what might be coming from Apple this fall – including our thoughts, hopes, and dreams as well as rumors.  To start, we’re hearing some rumors about the new charging cable.  Instead of the USB plug that we’ve all come to know and love, it’s possible that the new charger will be a flat 18W charger that uses USB-C instead. But is this a big deal?  Yes, and no.  Apple is potentially changing the way that we will charge our devices, which means, you’ll have to buy a new charger if you get one of the new iPhones.  You won’t be able to use your existing cable – which is kind of a bummer, isn’t it?  I mean, this drives me kind of crazy.  While I understand that designs change from time to time, but it feels like as soon as you get used to one thing, Apple changes it up on you.  Not only that but if you’ve got an older iPhone for work, for example, you’ve now got more than one type of charger to carry around.  This reminds me a lot of the headphone jack change that Apple made after the iPhone 6.iphone_xApple is also reportedly going to address the pricing policy. If you remember, Apple took a lot of flack for just how costly the iPhone X was.  While I don’t necessarily disagree with the pricing, I think that it makes it less accessible to the masses.  The second generation of the iPhone X will reportedly now start between $800 and $900, rather than the $999 starting price of last year’s model, while the large “iPhone X Plus” model will start between $900 and $1,000. The rumored 6.1-inch LCD iPhone will apparently adopt a more traditional pricing point in Apple’s iPhone pricing structure, starting between $600 and $700.As I alluded to in my opening paragraph, the name will be an interesting one.  Up until 2016, Apple was pretty consistent with the naming of their iPhones:

  • iPhone: 2007
  • iPhone 3G: 2008
  • iPhone 3GS: 2009
  • iPhone 4: 2010
  • iPhone 4s: 2011
  • iPhone 5: 2012
  • iPhone 5s: 2013
  • iPhone 6: 2014
  • iPhone 6s: 2015
  • iPhone 7: 2016

iphone xAnd then all hell broke loose.  Apple came out with the iPhone 8, and the iPhone X (or Ten).  Which makes you wonder if they will produce a 9, or skip it altogether.  I mean, there was no iPhone 2. They went from the original iPhone to the iPhone 3.  Well, technically, it was the iPhone 3G, but that is kind of weird, don’t you think? Either way, no one actually knows what it’s going to be called.  I suspect there is a small group of people at Apple who are working on what the next name will be.  Further, I suspect that Tim Cook is the only one who truly knows what they will land on.  When it is time to let others in on the secret, it will be on a need to know basis, so it doesn’t get leaked. While we expect that the new iPhone will be released at the end of September, that might not be the case.  The iPhone 8 was released on September 22, 2017.  But the iPhone X wasn’t released until November 3, 2017.  That, in my opinion, was a bit of a cluster on Apple’s part.  Which is why I think it’s in their best interest to release both phones in September.  If they don’t, they’re only hurting themselves.  I’m hopeful that they’ve learned from that mistake and we will see how this plays out in the months to come.  Until then, stay tuned for more rumors and updates as they become available.
