There’s a good chance that you will never hear me say anything bad about my Apple Watch. Why you ask? I’ve said this many times before, but I am a fan of Apple in general, but the Apple Watch might be one of my favorite devices. Sure, the iPhone is really the revolutionary technology, but the Watch itself ushered in an era of wearables. In fact, it was this week back in 2015 when the Apple Watch first hit stores. Can you believe that? The Apple Watch has only been around for a mere four years, and now our lives wouldn’t be the same if it wasn’t for wearables.

The Apple Watch was the first new product category that Apple had introduced since Tim Cook had taken over as CEO for Steve Jobs. At the time, iPhone sales were still at an all-time high, but Apple knew (as we all did) that the smartphone market wouldn’t be able to continue to grow at nearly the same rate that it had up until that point. Which is why Apple needed to prepare for the next big thing. 2014 was the year that tech companies were starting to get into the wearable game.

But the original Apple Watch doesn’t compare to what it is today. It was a typical “first generation” product. Meaning, it was something we all wanted, but the device itself was a bit rough around the edges. The Watch itself was quite sluggish, and I think that version is what left people with a bad taste in their mouth. Essentially all you could do was receive notifications, and track your fitness. But it wasn’t up to par when it came to third-party apps, and it took way too long to load data. Which meant, it was a lot simpler to just grab your iPhone and complete the required task.

The challenge with any kind of new device is that without updates, it will be outdated within a few years. So what is next for Apple when it comes to a new wearable?

It’s possible that Apple will release an Apple Watch Series 5 this September, and possibly make the announcement at WWDC in June. But what could that look like, and what does that mean? Well, to start, it means that I will be getting a new Apple Watch, but that’s beside the point. If Apple releases a new Watch, there is a good chance that it will include native sleep tracking. Which is something that the Apple Watch can’t currently do. But if Apple does that, they will also need to improve the battery life. Currently, the battery can last up to a day and a half before needing a recharge, but the Apple Watch Series 5 could add a more efficient processor that could switch to a lower-power mode at night. Or Apple could just increase the size of the battery itself.

Apple could also include another FDA-cleared health feature. While we haven’t heard anything specific about what this could mean, but it is a possibility. What we don’t expect to see is the ability to gauge an individual’s blood pressure. Samsung is currently looking at how successful the Galaxy Watch Active’s heart rate monitor can also be at estimating blood pressure. Those results aren’t available yet, so that may or may not be a future possibility for Apple.

It’s safe to say that the Apple Watch has changed considerably over the years. What we don’t have a clear picture of is how the next generation of Watch will change our lives, and to what extent? More health features could open the doors for a lot of people, which is likely why Apple will put more resources into health in the years to come.
