Europe’s highest court has sided with Google in a landmark case, ruling that the company does not have to apply the “right to be forgotten” policy globally. “Right to be forgotten” is the idea that private citizens can ask companies or websites to take down certain material about them that is considered to be “inadequate, irrelevant or no longer relevant, or excessive.” It means people can ask Google to scrub search results containing sensitive information or details of their past crimes.
Huawei
The CFO of Huawei, Meng Wanzhou, returned to Canada for a document hearing. Defense lawyers for Meng presented videos and documents to back up claims that Canadian authorities had collaborated with the FBI. More specifically, they believe that the two had engaged in a “covert criminal investigation” to unlawfully detail, search and interrogate the Chinese executive.
Play Pass
Google launched a $5/month Play Pass subscription service that gives subscribers access to over 350 apps and games. Google Play Pass is available now in the United States and will become available to all Android users throughout the remainder of the week. The service includes unlimited access to games and apps for users. Which makes me wonder – is this the type of service that you would consider purchasing?
Facebook is spending more than $500 million to acquire a company that lets you control computers with your mind. The company is acquiring the maker of an electronic wristband that says it will allow people to share photos on its social network, click a button using a computer’s mouse, and perform other computing tasks simply by thinking about it. If this does come to fruition, it could be a game-changer.
Amazon
It’s rumored that Amazon will be rolling out a fitness tracking device, but not what you think. Amazon plans to roll out a fitness-tracking Alexa wireless earbuds. The earbuds will be able to track run distances, calories burned and even the pace of running. This is the type of technology that we haven’t yet seen. How will this connect to your device? Artificial Intelligence
Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai warned against rushing into regulating artificial intelligence. His warning isn’t altruistic though. AI just happens to be vital to Google’s future growth. Pichai has said that governments should be wary of rushing into broadly regulating artificial intelligence as this can hinder innovation and research.
Disney
Disney’s CEO Bob Iger criticized Twitter for its “nastiness”. Iger went further to say that abuse is the reason why an acquisition never took place. Disney was in talks to acquire Twitter in 2016 but walked about from the deal. Twitter does have a problem with trolls, but is there anything that they can actually do? Social media companies do have an obligation to minimize bad behavior, but do they have the ability to do so?
