You know it is illegal to discriminate in the workplace but that does not stop ideas from forming anyway. There are many decisions that are made based upon details of an employee’s personal life. Would you promote someone who is always late due to public transportation after her husband moved out and took the car; or a person who is in a very stable relationship/single and is always on time. Revealing private information to your boss may seem like a way to bond but don’t. At the end of the day you must remember that is your boss. I’d keep these details about yourself private.

  • Night Life

Your boss does not care what you do after you leave work unless it is work related. He does not care about your drinking or what movie you went to see. need to know Your boss may care if your kids are sick or hurt but only if it will hurt your work. In other words what happened last night should stay there.

  • Religious Ideas

Discrimination against religious beliefs is not only wrong but illegal. That said, talking about religion every two seconds can result in some hot water and out of a job.

  • Politics

Your political affiliation is about as important to people at work as your comic book collection or your childhood stories about Space Camp should stay private information. You could be offending coworkers and not even know it.

  • Part-time hustle

In this day and age a lost of us have second jobs. You boss might or might not know about it. That is not the kind of information you want to offer up unless directly asked. If you are late, sluggish or your performance goes down at any point, your boss will assume it is because you are not putting his company 1st.

  • Are you?….

Unless your sexual orientation is a big part of your job such as drag queen, do not disclose your sexual orientation to your boss. Now don’t get me wrong, if you are doing hoops out of the closet; good for you. All I am saying is that, don’t let your personal choice become what defines you at your job. Let the work you do be your representative.

  • Your Living Situation

Do you really have to let your boss know you are living at home in the basement or in the penthouse of a luxury condo. No one at work needs to know about your living situation. People will judge you. Even if they do not say anything, they are thinking something.

  • Mental Health Issues

Your mental issues unless it has a direct effect on the work you can and can not do. Your boss does not need you had a breakdown and are now on 200mg of antidepressants. Your boss does not care if you are going through a divorce or breakup? If you have to go to a therapist; let them know that you have to go to the dr.

  • Do they speak english in What?

The last thing you want is for your boss to ask you about your crazy weekend and your response to be “what”? Your boss only knows information you choose to share in person or on the social network circuits.  If you don’t want your boss to know your personal beeswax; don’t post everywhere. No Instagram, Facebook, thumblr or whatever the next thing is.
