The iPhone and iPad have come a long way from where they started. The iPhone is darn near a professional grade camera with the right app to support post editing. The photo taking is one thing but what really sets the iDevices apart is that they also do a wonderful job with video-recording.

The capabilities of the devices coupled with the vision of create directors have lead to some spectacular projects. In that route, ABC’s Modern Family will air an episode that was completely filmed on iPhone 6, iPad, FaceTime and iMessage apps. There is still some Hollywood magic involved a side from the Apple products. To make it feel real, the show’s creators shot everything at the same time, using three sets rolling at the same time.

This is either the best marking stunt ever created or a genius idea to save budget. We are guessing its a little bit of both but more of a marking stunt. I will tell you right now that it has worked. The WebSphere is talking about it and the numbers for tonight’s episode should be incredible.

“Everything was shot on the iPhone 6 or new iPads. With one or two small scenes shot using MacBook Pros.” ~Steve Levitan, Modern Family’s Co-Creator &  Executive Producer

The first few shots of “Connection Lost” start with Claire Dunphy (Julie Bowen) on her laptop at the airport. She can’t find her daughter Haley (Sarah Hyland) after a fight. Then the blue bubbles start to fill up the screen. The blue bubbles are iMesages. Text only show up in blue if you message another iDevice. These messages are followed by emails and FaceTime video chats. These various forms of communication come in from the rest of this Modern Family.  While this is episode great free marking for Apple, it is also a very realistic representation of what always connected communication in many families looks like in including the Steve Levitan.

We’re sort of in an age now when we have too much information, which can take us down a specific path. You’re getting too much information too quickly to be able to slow it down and parse it out.” ~Megan Ganz, the writer behind the episode “Connection Lost.”
