Things are changing very fast in the world of movies. Its not only the fact that people are streaming and downloading movies more. Rather legal or via torrents movies are available in so many forms it is incredible that they are still making so much money for Hollywood. That change is an international thing. Case in point China is the world’s second largest film market but its box office beat down those of the US for the first time ever. Last month it took $650m thanks to The Man From Macau II, which raked in $104m. China’s second biggest film for February was historical action movie Dragon Blade, starring Jackie Chan, John Cusack and Adrien Brody, which took $95m. The US box office total was is $640m, according to research firm Entgroup.

China’s film industry is growing very rapidly with more and more screens being built. The country has a population of 1.3 billion. The thing is that many of those people are moving to urban areas as they move up to middle class. The sales were helped in part to Valentine’s Day which is a popular celebration in China. Not the way Americans think of the holiday with gifts simply for her. In China many couples visit movies instead of gift giving. It should be interesting to see if this trend continues for a whole year.
