It’s hard to put 10 years into 2 hours. There are things we compounded, just so everybody was getting the essence of why we were making that music. ~Ice Cube
The movie while great does have some issues. 1st and foremost the film is lacking some shady and violent behavior by Dr. Dre. The omission of Dr. Dre’s physical attacks on women, most notably Denise “Dee” Barnes has the internet calling foul. It became such an issue Apple had to address it in a statement. Dre issued a general apology saying, “I apologize to the women I’ve hurt. Twenty-five years ago I was young man drinking too much and in over my head with no real structure in my life. However, none of this is an excuse for what I did … I’m doing everything I can so I never resemble that man again.”
Another spot that could have used attention was giving MC Ren more of a role in the movie. In the movie is seen as an afterthought. While in reality he was one of NWA’s strongest lyricists. At the end of the day Straight Outta Compton has at the time of this writing made $111.48 million domestically on a budget of $29 million. That is good for and should serve as the blueprint for future projects that are not typical “black movies.” Straight Outta Compton’s success at the box office is surprising to some. However, this is what happens when you make a good movie regardless of the subject.
