Have you seen the trailer for the Han Solo movie? Donald Glover as a young Lando Calrissian was a great choice, and it’s made a lot of people stand up and applaud. But now that some of us have seen the trailer, all we want is a Lando-movie starring, of course, Donald Glover. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Glover described how the wardrobe was a large part for him as he would attempt to get into character.
“Lando’s not really the best dressed person on that set. And I don’t say that lightly. There’s just a lot of cool costumes and a lot of cool clothing. Lando’s clothing, that’s what I like. I was secretly super happy. His clothing is another spice of life. He takes pride in the clothing. It makes things easier. When people see you and you’re debonair, they tend to want to give you stuff easier. Yeah, people are like, oh, this guy’s got it together. He’s obviously not starving, you know. He has enough leisure time to choose a nice outfit.”
But let’s talk about Donald Glover for a moment. He is incredibly talented. He’s literally good at everything. He wrote for 30 Rock, starred in Community, cultivated a Grammy-winning musical persona – Childish Gambino, and even created a Golden Globe-winning series – Atlanta. But the best part? Well, maybe not the best part, but certainly what makes all of this talent so amazing – he’s only 34. Esquire points out that Donald Glover is one of those stars who is only continuing to rise. Atlanta’s second season comes out on March 1, and he’ll be coming to the big screen soon in the upcoming Solo: A Star Wars Story. This will mark his highest-profile film role to date. But I am pretty sure that this won’t be the last for him.
Donald Glover describes himself as a bit of an underdog. But like I mentioned in the last paragraph, he’s incredibly talented. Glover stated that Solo will follow a version of Lando still developing the confidence to become the man who will eventually run Cloud City. But still being able to hone the roguish charm that would turn him into an icon. Glover also touched on what he learned from the original Lando, Billy Dee Williams, after landing the role. So what was Williams’ advice? Simply – be charming. Which shouldn’t be too hard for Glover, because I mean, well, it’s Donald Glover.
Because we are meeting Lando as a young man, Glover’s Lando will be a little more over the top than the older version. In fact, Glover’s version is someone who doesn’t even know that kind of responsibility is something that he will be capable of. But there’s one major trait of the older Lando that we’ll get to see in the younger version. Which is Lando is a bit of a rule follower. Glover notes, “Lando likes rules because he’s somebody who is in a position to benefit from rules.” Adding, Lando is “smart enough to figure out a way to like get out of things”, especially by using loopholes. Which kind of sounds contrary, but sometimes that’s what you have to do.
