Good news for gaming fans! The Devil May Cry 5 is scheduled to be released on March 8, 2019 – specifically for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC. This announcement was made at Gamescom this week, during the special Gamescom edition of the Inside Xbox live stream. Devil May Cry 5 is the sequel to Devil May Cry 4, which came out in 2008, and it marks the return of Hideaki Itsuno as director. Microsoft alluded to this game being a possibility at its Electronic Entertainment Expo event in July. The reason that this is so exciting is that it’s the first entry in the main series since 2008! Ninja Theory briefly took over the franchise with DmC: Devil May Cry in 2013, and while Devil May Cry 5 takes some styling tips from that game, it doesn’t follow its storyline directly.
Capcom debuted the first Devil May Cry in 2001. The company originally planned the game as part of its Resident Evil franchise, but Devil May Cry became its own thing with its focus on fast-paced action. In an interview, producer, Matt Walker indicated that this game is for the fans. He noted that series diehards have been pushing for a sequel to Devil May Cry 4 for the last ten years. He also notes that this particular game isn’t a slight at Ninja Theory or DmC at all. In fact, Walker explained that they loved the game.
Devil May Cry 5 director Hideaki Itsuno has made it abundantly clear that he and the rest of the DmC team worked with Ninja Theory to ensure it made a unique action game that was “just as important” as any of the rest of the games in the series. In fact, Itsuno has taken what he learned from DmC and applied it to the design and mechanic decisions for Devil May Cry 5. But this time, the game will expand further on the combat that we saw in the first four games. With all the focus on the previous games and appreciation for the titles that came before it, the protagonist Nero has still got a bit of a redesign. His hair, for example, has been cut considerably, and he looks like a much different person in this most recent trailer.
Itsuno had meant for the Devil May Cry 4 character to look like a sports star, at the top of their game. More specifically, he wanted to give the impression that the character could take on anything – hence his shorter hairstyle and confident demeanor.
Why March? Well, it used to be a slow time for games, with most major releases coming out during the holiday season. But we’ve seen more and more titles finding success by releasing in that January to April window. Earlier this year, Monster Hunter: World launched in January and God of War launched in April. Both are two of the most successful games of the year. March is likely a good time for Devil May Cry 5 as there are a lot of games coming out in January and February – Kingdom Hearts III, Resident Evil 2, Anthem and Metro Exodus. Devil May Cry 5 will have to compete with The Division 2, which comes out on March 15 though.
