BET Hip Hop Awards 2012: Overrated or undervalued

the Cypher is always a breath of fresh air. I think that is the shows way of reminding people this what hip hop should be like. Unfortunately Hip Hop is so mainstream now that the style of the cypher does not sale. Only hooks, beats, rented cars and half dressed women in videos do.

The BET Hip Hop Awards have always been just a hair above the short lived Source Awards. A show for music that is over rated, out dated and lacking of substance. Does that sound harsh? Well being from the Golden Age of hip hip. When it was more about the lyrics and less about the catchy chorus and sampled beat; I tend to be harsh. This years award show will be no different.

Kanye West leads the nominees with 17. It’s hard to hate on Mr. West. He is one talented conceited mother (beep). 2 Chainz however, not so much. There is a reason that Luda dropped him from DTP so many years ago. He didn’t see anything in the rapper. I still don’t see anything. So how can he have 13 nominations? Is he what Hip Hop has become. Drake comes in 3rd with 11 nominations. Since there is so much cross over in Hip Hop, I guess it’s ok to have a great rapper turn R&B singer in the mix.

The 2012 BET Hip-Hop Awards is taking place in Atlanta in just a few hours but doesn’t air until October 9. Mike Epps will host (dude is funny) and I am here live. Why? While I do not approve of the nominees or the way the show represents Hip Hop; the Cypher is always a breath of fresh air. I think that is the shows way of reminding people this what hip hop should be like. Unfortunately Hip Hop is so mainstream now that the style of the cypher does not sale. Only hooks, beats, rented cars and half dressed women in videos do.
