Chevrolet has put together the MLK Reading Project, a digital platform designed to let Americans honor King’s influence and achievements. Chevy encourages fans to go to the site to leave videos of themselves recording his quotes and share them with others to help promote The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial, which is set to open on August 28 in Washington, D.C.
Did you know there was even going to be a Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial? Is this the only day you think about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr? Is the only day you think about race relations? I wrote about White Friends & Black Friends a few days ago discussing the differences. We have come a long way from the days of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. but still have a very long way to go. Yes we do have a black president that was successfully elected by Americans of every color. Yes we have black CEOs of major companies. Yes we have black politicians and broadcasters. Yes, we do have all of these things. They are however very far between.
It takes a simple look towards the public outlet of America. TV, Movies and music to see the disparity of race relations. Run a quick experiment. Think of the last movie you saw. How many black people were in that had speaking parts not just extras or fillers. Do that same thing for any show that comes on. In sports the teams may be 70% black on the field/court but who is calling the shots are not black. We have come a long way but still have a long way to go.
