Live video is what mobile was a few years ago for tech companies. Everyone is trying to figure out how to make it work. While YouTube has had the feature for some time it was never at the forefront of what they do. Flash forward a year years and now live video streaming is a standard feature on almost all social media platforms. Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube all have it as a main staple of their networks. Instagram has been stealing Snapchat’s lunch for a while but it looks like this time they may beat them to the punch in something. It was officially mistakenly leaked by T Journal when a reader noticed a non-functional icon appearing in an update. CEO Kevin Systrom confirmed to the Financial Times that it will be adding live streaming to the app. Systrom gave no date at all of when the feature will be added to the Instagram app.

Live is really exciting for us. I think it can enhance what we’re doing. If I’m trying to strengthen relationships with someone I love, them streaming video to me live would be an amazing way to be closer to them.

The Live icon is alongside the row with Instagram Stories. Broadcasting will be activated by selecting the option from the camera screen. Instagram recently added a built-in Boomerang mode. The feature lets you stitch together a burst of photos into a video.
