This is only my opinion, and not the representation of Saintel Daily, LLC.

Ever since January of this year, I’ve felt like I’ve been living in an alternate universe.  Mainly because of the state of politics in the United States right now.  As a political science major, and someone who works with politicians, I am very interested in it.  But right now, there is nothing really interesting about politics.  It also amazes me that anyone thinks they can do a good job being a politician.  Or even a political advisor.  There is the thought that no experience is needed.  And maybe experience is overrated when it comes to the elected officials.  But, they need to surround themselves with people who are educated.  They need people in their corner who know and understand what’s happening, in order to be able to make informed decisions.

I’m mentioning this because of an article I read today.  I really shouldn’t be surprised, as it only seems to be getting worse and worse.  But here it is.  President Trump has nominated Sam Clovis to be the head of the U.S Department of Agriculture.  Which means he will be in charge of research, education and economic analysis. What’s the big deal you ask?  Well, Clovis, in my opinion doesn’t have the credentials to do the job.  In the past, this particular job has been held by biochemists, plant physiologists and food nutrition experts.  The position requires these kinds of background in order to research specifics related to science, public health or food policy.

Further to that, this person is going to be in charge of directing the USDA’s scientific mission, which includes everything from preparing US agriculture to deal with climate change, to advising on nutrition and food-borne outbreaks.  Which leads me to my next question.  On what grounds is Clovis qualified for this job?  The short answer is none.  But for argument’s sake, let’s look at his credentials.  To start, he has a PhD in public administration.  Which, is a great degree to have from a political advisory perspective.  But it shouldn’t have landed him this particular portfolio.

He has been part of the Trump campaign since 2015.  After jumping ship from Rick Perry.  He has hand a handful of other jobs, including an economics professor.  But nothing points to him having any kind of scientific expertise.  Or even knowledge, if I’m being frank.  Which leads you to wonder why Trump picked Clovis.  Well, the answer is pretty clear – Trump is looking for support.  Specifically around the idea that there is no such thing as climate change.  It’s been reported that Clovis thinks climate change is caused by “sunspot changes, Krakatoa, and other volcanic activity”.  He has also suggested that climate change is a ruse to redistribute wealth to poorer nations.

What also makes Clovis a perfect nominee in Trump’s eyes, is that he is anti- Barack Obama and Hilary Clinton.  In 2014, he suggested that many congressional Republicans wanted to impeach Obama, but were too afraid because of the colour of his skin.  Ergo, making them racist.  But he won’t reveal the reason.  I’m really trying to stay unbiased while writing this, but Clovis is just making it so hard!  In the eight years that Obama was in office, was there even ONE reason why he should have been impeached?  I’m asking this question as I can’t think of any.. but would gladly entertain a response if there were.  And in the, what, 150 days that Trump has been in office, there have been at least 150 reasons to impeach Trump?  That number isn’t factual, but I think you see where I’m going with this.

Clovis is anti Hilary Clinton because he claims that she should have had a shorter leash on her husband, during his presidency.  Which is basically saying that she is the reason Bill Clinton cheated.  I may be getting a bit off topic here, but he seems to throw out some wild accusations.  On what grounds is any of that accurate?  The reason I mention this is because I think that he’s using these kinds of “headlines” to deflect from his inadequacies.  He is extremely under-qualified for this job.

It almost seems like Trump has given up the presidency, in a way.  Like he doesn’t really care any more. Or maybe he never did and it’s all been a game to him.  He’s constantly in the news for things that no president should ever be in the news for.  He’s been accused of some pretty horrendous things, and there is no end in sight.  Including his latest nomination to this post.  Which is someone who isn’t a scientist.  Or knows anything about science.  That’s like appointing your grandma because she loves you and she thinks you’re doing a great job.  Who does that?
