I’m going to preface this post by letting you know that I’m not a big fan of Facebook.  I am, however a fan of Instagram, and the Stories feature in that app is growing on me.  Slowly growing, I might add.  But now, you’re going to be able to cross over between the two platforms.  More specifically you will be able to post your Instagram Stories into Facebook.  You may remember that Facebook Stories launched earlier in the year, and essentially they’re the same as Instagram Stories.  I need to stop using the word “Stories” in this post, but I can’t.

Facebook says that they’ve allowed this cross-over because they’re always wanting to make it easier for you to share your moments with the people who matter to you.  Which, I’ll buy, but I wonder how useful this is?  I guess my problem with this is why have both apps then?  And ultimately, won’t one app become the other?  The one downside, according to Facebook, is that you can’t reverse post.  Meaning, you can’t post from Facebook to Instagram. But they’re not ruling that out for the future.

All of this is interesting, don’t you think?  I mean, isn’t this kind of what Snapchat is?  And isn’t this what Instagram Stories has become?  Instagram Stories has been criticized because it’s turning into Snapchat.  Or at least that’s how it seems.  And now Facebook is becoming Instagram?  A daily active user count has yet to be announced for Facebook Stories, but we know that Instagram Stories is killing Snapchat in this regard.  So why do we need another app that does the exact same thing?

What do you think about these apps?  Or better question, is there one that you prefer to use? I understand making the two platforms work better together.  But why have interoperability when its the same thing?  If Facebook didn’t have Stories, this would make sense to me.  Yes, I understand how this would make your life a little bit easier in terms of posting your story.  But I don’t see how this would be truly beneficial for anyone.

This isn’t me just showing my bias.  I truly don’t see a benefit in this.  Or the only benefit I can see is being able to cross post.  As I mentioned earlier, Instagram Stories is growing on me.  I’m still not a huge fan of it because I’m a traditionalist and I like the “old-fashioned” way of posting photos on Instagram.   But I don’t really have a good reason for disliking it.  It’s just not my preference.  Facebook Stories, on the other hand, acts in the same way.  So maybe making the connection between the two platforms is something good.  I just struggle with interoperability a bit. More specifically, I struggle with having all these apps that essentially do the same thing.  If you’re making an app, it should do something slightly different than your rival app.  I don’t like to see the copying of features from platform to platform.
